Hi Marianne, Thanks for asking about Luna, whose name has been changed to Lacy. She's doing so well! I think she's trying to figure out whether she's gone to heaven, she seems to be so content here. Moments after she arrived, she decided the fireplace hearth was the place for her, and she's taken possession of the little brick ledge. The kids have made it more comfortable for her with a towel and some fuzzy toys, and it's where she settles in whenever she's ready for a nap. I suspect that she'll have a hard time fitting on the hearth by the time she's full grown, but for now it's a great out-of-the-way place for her to declare as her own. We expected a restless night for Lacy on her first night here, but she was very content to snuggle up on the floor beside our bed and snore the night away. The next morning, I took her for her first walk and was surprised by how quickly she adapted to the leash. Even though it was bitter cold and we kept our walk very short, she was so curious about the neighborhood and its smells that I think she was genuinely disappointed when we went back indoors to escape the brutal wind. She went out again in the afternoon with Grace, who reported that she was uneasy when others walked close by but handled the leash perfectly while they walked down to the high school and back. Lacy passed the middle part of the day in her crate, and when Andrew arrived home and brought her outside, she ran to the crate door as soon as she came back in the house and waited to climb inside. I don't think we'll have any major issues with crate training her (though I suspect the peanut-butter-stuffed Kong was a good motivator for her to tolerate the confinement when no one was home)! Of course, we're in a honeymoon period right now, but we're all surprised by how gentle and calm Lacy is. She's perfectly content to nestle in with the kids and get a neck rub, or to squeak her toys and roll around on the floor a little. She seems most comfortable with Emma and will be downright playful with her. Around the adults, she's a bit more reserved, but you can see the devilishness in her eyes, so I suspect her personality is going to emerge over the next few weeks as she becomes more confident with us. She's even chased her first rabbit through the back yard. I've enrolled her in a puppy class that will begin in early January, and she's visited the vet to get her next set of puppy shots. For the next few weeks, we'll focus on exposing her to people and getting her comfortable with her surroundings. Thank you so much for your assistance in bringing our new pup to us. Even though we know there will be some trials ahead as we all get used to each other, we couldn't be happier having Lacy become a part of our family. Ann |
