GUS
I started with GSRAW as a foster home. I hadn=t yet adopted a dog of my own and I was totally new to the German Shepherd breed. I had spent my life around a Springer Spaniel, Lab and Golden Retrievers. Growing up I always wanted a German Shepherd, but I was at the mercy of my Dad who likes to hunt - hence the Lab and Spaniel. I had fostered four dogs for GSRAW (Dillon, Jasper, Lambeau and Guinness) and was in a quasi search for my own. I hadn=t yet decided if I should go older or try for a puppy. Then Greta came into the rescue. Greta was taken in by the rescue as a stray in early 2004 and it was soon discovered that she was pregnant. The vet thought she was carrying four puppies. However, Greta surprised all when nine pups popped out.
Greta and her pups were eventually fostered by Faye, from Angel=s Wish. Angel=s Wish was in charge of adopting out the pups and GSRAW Greta. Sue and I went to go see the pups in late April, 2004, as Greta had found an adoptive home. The pups were awesome. I didn=t really notice Gus right away as he was sleeping in the pen outside, plus another pup, Tugg, was trying for all our attention. Faye then put the pups inside and Sue and I went in and sat with the group. I sat down and, without provocation, little Gus climbed in my lap and there he stayed. I looked at Sue and said, AI think I have been chosen.@ She agreed. So that=s how Gus adopted me. He is now over a year old and is my best friend and confidant. He loves doggie daycare, the dog park, furry toys, lots and lots of treats, and pretending to hunt squirrels in the yard! He is as smart as a whip (don=t all people say this about their dogs!) and never ceases to amaze me with his antics. He lives with a big Golden Retriever named Bella who lets him get away with just about anything. He also has a cousin dog, Howie, who is his best buddy in the whole world.
