Molly came to foster care after living with one elderly woman her entire life. The woman had to go into a nursing home, so Molly needed a new home. She came with a thick vet file and we were more than a little concerned about her. She was vomiting a lot and losing weight. We took her to several vets and had a myriad of testing done – which got us nowhere! She had indefinite things wrong – but nothing that could be traced to a specific cause or condition. One thing we knew was that Molly’s diet had been very poor. She got poor quality dog food – when she ate it – but mostly she had gotten scraps of people food. Now I know every dog will tell you they love people food – but unless carefully and intentionally prepared, it is not a nutritionally balanced meal and not something a dog should live on! So as a last ditch effort, we switched Molly to a high quality, grain-free diet (no people food!). Much to our surprise she loved it (she is also a very picky eater)! AND – she thrived…. The vomiting stopped. Her energy levels rose. She wasn’t scratching as much (did I mention she had skin conditions too?). Molly was a happy, happy girl. Well as you can imagine, Molly’s foster Mom had become quite fond of her through all of this. She didn’t know how she would let her go and knew that it would have to be to a “perfect” new family. We thought we found that family once. She went there for several days, but was obviously extremely unhappy. She hardly left the door that her foster Mom had exited and she howled through the night. Molly had already chosen her new family – and it was not this one. So Molly came back to her foster Mom, Barb – and dare I say… they’re living Happily Ever After…. |
